5 Tips to Keep your Office’s Carpet Always Looking New
Piero Carlo Galofaro Silva • February 4, 2022

Your new office carpet is a significant investment, and to keep it looking as-new for as long as possible, regular cleaning is essential.

But how often should you clean your office carpet, and what is the best way to clean it? Today I’m sharing 5 carpet cleaning tips, to help maintain the as-new appearance of your office carpet tiles.

Create a Maintenance Schedule

It is just as important to have a regimented cleaning and maintenance plan in place as it is to choose the right cleaning method. Carpet cleaning requirements will be unique to your office, and will depend on everything from levels of foot traffic, to the weather and your office location.

To plan out your maintenance schedule, the first thing you need to do is map out your office space and mark out the different levels of foot traffic across different parts of the space. You can then categorize this with a traffic light system:

  • High traffic areas – red
  • Medium traffic areas – yellow
  • Low traffic areas – green

From here, you can work out how often each area needs cleaning, and create a maintenance schedule for your office.

Vacuuming

Regularly vacuuming your carpet is the single most important factor in extending the life of your carpet and improving appearance retention.

High traffic areas (your red zone) in your office should be vacuumed daily. For medium traffic areas, this can be reduced to two or three times a week, and low traffic areas you might be able to only vacuum once or twice a week. This is a guideline – if your office experiences higher-than-average levels of foot traffic across the whole space then it may need vacuuming more often.

Alternatively, if the weather is bad, and lots of dirt and water is being brought into your office entrance on people’s shoes, you might need to clean more regularly in the winter compared with the summer. Turn on your sump pump or use a shop vacuum to remove water as quickly as possible.

Deep Clean

Regular vacuuming is capable of removing 80% of dirt and debris from your carpet, but even with the best vacuum cleaner available, you still won’t manage to remove 100%.

The problem with the leftover 20% is that this dirt and debris gets ground into your carpet, and starts to wear away at the carpet fibers like sandpaper, which speeds up the appearance degradation of your carpet.

As a guideline, high traffic areas should be deep cleaned monthly, medium traffic areas will need deep cleaning three to four times a year, and low traffic areas can should be deep cleaned once or twice a year.

It’s All Clean San Diego is always available to plan your office deep cleaning schedule to make sure the carpets are always in a good shape.

Have a Process To Deal With Spills

Most carpet tiles have built-in stain resistance to help protect your carpet against staining and soiling. However, these methods aren’t perfect: they prevent spills penetrating into your carpet so they can easily be cleaned up as they happen.

However, if you’ve got a large office it won’t be possible to clean up all spills immediately. Some spills will be worse than others – like if you drop a whole cup of coffee, rather than just spilling a few drops.

You should encourage your employees to clean up minor spills as soon as they happen, and it’s worth having an established cleaning process in place to deal with big spills, because these will cause extensive staining.

Stain Protector is Always a Good Option

While this isn’t strictly a cleaning tip, using stain protector will have a huge impact on how long it maintains its appearance. For example, using stain protector it won’t show those small coffee drips that always happens on office spaces.
